Continuing Education Programs (for nurses & social workers)

  1. "Dealing with Difficult Families"
    This activity will enhance the participant's ability to interact with distressed and challenging types of families with increased comfort, professionalism, and compassion.  Attendees will be able to identify the characteristics of 10 specific types of these families and implement specific tools for dealing with each one in order to enhance the overall care to their patients.  These skills are generalizable to all settings; however, the content was developed with a geriatric patient/ adult child or elder spouse focus in mind.
     
  2. "Ethical Considerations in Artificial Nutrition & Hydration at End of Life"
    This activity will enhance the attendee's ability to identify the psychosocial and cultural variables effecting decisions re: nutrition and hydration and identify pros and cons of artificial nutrition and hydration at end of life.  Techniques for communicating with families and members of the interdisciplinary team will be provided to increase the participant’s ability to advocate for the patient’s wishes.
     
  3. "Dealing with Dementia"
    This activity will enhance the participant's ability to interact and effectively communicate with patients with dementia in a variety of settings from ER to Long Term Care to home care settings while learning to advocate for proper diagnostics and treatment approaches.   Information on the latest research on causative factors and drug trials for Alzheimer’s Disease in general and behavioral escalations in particular will be presented along with specific techniques for  behavioral management including de-escalation, minimizing sundowning, behavioral analysis, and validation with an overall emphasis on enhancing the dignity & independence of the person with dementia.  The latest information on the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2005 Campaign for Quality Residential Care for those with this disease and the impact on the delivery of nursing care in these settings will be provided.
